So in 1970, when this case was initiated, abortion was criminalized in the state of Texas.

And Jane Roe, that was not her real name, her real name was Norman McCorvey,

but she was seeking an abortion, eventually the case made its way to the Supreme Court.

And the decision laid out the idea that women can seek an abortion,

they can seek to terminate a pregnancy in the privacy of a doctor's office,

up to the point that a fetus can survive outside the womb,

which is generally regarded as 22 to 24 weeks gestation.
