| 0:05.0 | Let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. |
| 0:08.0 | It's called to mind all those we've promised to pray for. |
| 0:12.0 | Recently I was having a good conversation with about 25 really great |
| 0:16.7 | Catholic college students and I asked them what is the purpose of marriage? |
| 0:23.0 | In their own way, basically every one of them |
| 0:26.0 | said that the purpose of marriage is the pursuit of happiness. |
| 0:31.0 | Well, which I kind of interpreted as a sophisticated pleasure grab. |
| 0:36.3 | The problem with that is that as soon as they don't feel their spouse is making them happy, then they've lost the purpose of that marriage and they leave. |
| 0:47.0 | But that makes marriage about use, using the spouse as a means to happiness and to avoid loneliness. |
| 0:55.0 | And how many times have we heard someone say, |
| 0:59.0 | I don't want to be unhappy for the rest of my life, |
| 1:02.0 | so I'm getting a divorce. Now these young people were |
| 1:06.1 | actually shocked to find out what the real purpose of marriage is. It is to be sent on a mission from God to cooperate valiantly with the love of the Creator, to have |
| 1:20.0 | children and to teach them to become saints so that God can build up his family, his |
| 1:27.4 | kingdom on earth. The Catechism teaches us that two sacraments, holy orders and matrimony are directed towards the salvation of others. |
| 1:41.0 | If they contribute as well to personal salvation, it is through service to others that they do so. |
| 1:47.0 | These two sacraments confer a particular mission in the church to serve to build up the people of God. |
| 1:57.0 | So first and foremost, matrimony is a mission to build the kingdom of God. |
| 2:07.0 | Our Father who art in heaven, hallow it be your name, thy kingdom come, |
| 2:11.3 | they will be down on earth as it is in heaven. |
