Prologue

We came home because Thomas refused to spend the night.

This email is how it began. The tone was restrained, but I could feel the panic bubbling up underneath.

I knew that something bad had been brewing for a long time and that it suddenly became too much to handle.

Have you ever dived into a ball pit? I remember going to one at Chucky Cheese when I was a kid.

This bizarre, massive play arena, like a giant rectangle,

filled to the brim with plastic balls.

I'd walk up to the ledge like you would at a swimming pool,

leap off, and land with a thud.

I loved it.

I'd crawl my way out to one of the edges,

climb out of the pit,

and do it all over again.

What kept me coming back over and over

was not that relatively uneventful feeling of diving in,

but the feeling that followed,
