In 1955, a show called Studio One

featured a Rod Sailing Pen story

called The Man Who Caught the Ball at Coogan's Bluff.

Martin Grams Jr. describes it like this.

Sailing script dramatized the story of George Abernathy, a 50-year-old man who works at a standard

government job. He is a creature of habit. He is totally passive, selfless and dull.

Even his wife controls his finances. One day in mid-August,

the pattern of habit George established, is altered. The office is closed for renovations, so

he decides to take in a ball game at the polo grounds. A pitched ball makes its way into

the crowd and by some fantastic miracle George stretches out his arm to protect himself and catches the ball.

The crowd goes wild with backslaps and congratulations and the TV announcer interviews him.

This was an act of destiny, a new purpose in his living.

George returns home and suggests to his wife that

they dine out and go dancing. His clothes go from Undertaker Grey to flamboyant checks. His speech

is peppery and colloquial. He may have kicked the hell out of the habit, but his wife Alice
