Summary

Founded in 2011, indie-folk duo The Milk Carton Kids swiftly emerged as a major force in the American folk tradition, blending ethereal harmonies and intricate musicianship with a uniquely powerful brand of contemporary songcraft. On this episode, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, the musicians behind the Grammy-nominated band, join Rhett to talk about their personal creative journeys as well as their collective journey, and the months-long project that resulted in their newest release, I Only See The Moon. Kenneth and Joey share some of the wisdom they’ve collected over the years, and explain why staying true to oneself is the most important thing an artist can do. Listen to their new release, I Only See The Moon, here. That's when it got wheels off. The Milk Carton kids, Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattonale, started making music together in 2011.

0:31.8

Over the ensuing years, they've released a bunch of records, played a bunch of great shows.

0:36.8

I've gotten to see them a couple of times here and there and been blown away to watch the magic that they are able to create with just their two voices and a couple of guitars. I am so glad to get them on this show. I was, full disclosure, a little concerned

0:59.5

about trying to interview two people. It's always a little tricky. But I think it has worked

1:05.6

well with them because they are complementary figures in the room, in the space, both musically and conversationally.

1:16.6

And I think you will be able to differentiate between their two voices, their two personalities, also complementary, not polar opposites, but not terribly similar in their approach, in their

1:35.0

sense of humor, in their take on things. We carried on our conversation after I had stopped

1:44.0

recording for a little while,

1:45.2

and I joked with them as we continued to talk that I wished I had recorded it

1:50.1

because they just keep dropping knowledge.

1:54.6

They've got lots of opinions, lots of deep thoughts,

1:58.2

which sounds like I'm being silly, but it's so great. It's great stuff.

2:06.2

I love hearing their take on stuff. And I think you are really going to enjoy hearing Joey and

2:14.2

Kenneth from the milk carton kids dig into their own personal creative journeys,

their collective journey as the Milk Carton Kids.
