Our interview with Mike Hope aka Mike the Ruler is a full circle moment. Mike—internet legend, stylist, designer, and casting director—joined us in studio over a decade since he came on Fashion Bros to talk about what he's been up to since his somewhat regrettable debut, the Cool Teen era and all the success his crew has since found, getting a taste of digital clout at such a young age, his time in wilderness school for troubled youth, what psychotherapy has taught him, the downfall of Balenciaga, Supreme and the various other specialized interests he had as child, Balenciaga x Supreme lore, how he went from working for Ye to Demna and giving them the final push needed to work together on Yeezy Gap, the new Gucci, styling Nettspend, what the hell is going on with the Met Gala, Fashion's wastefulness and nihilism, a new chapter building his dream brand from scratch, how he shops and acquires extremely rare grails, and much more on Mike the Ruler's interview with The Only Podcast That Matters™.

0:03.8

He's more than just a cool teen.

0:21.6

He's a cool man. And while you were near 20s posting Drake Lurks' IG captions and asking Reddit what socks to wear with your first pair of loafers, he was shaping some of the most influential developments in contemporary fashion. Whether you're a no woman or lowly surf, bow down as the youngest OG is here to talk, working with Ye and Demna, the current wave of menswear content creators and everything he's got on the horizon, stylist designer and

casting director. Mike, the ruler, Mike, how are you?

0:29.9

Hey, guys, long time no see. Yeah, Mr. Hope back in the building. Full circle.

0:34.4

For real, for real. It's been 12 years.

0:37.8

12?

0:38.4

What do we have here? Yeah. It was 20, well, was it not 25? 12 years. 2014. 2014. It was like October 2014. Yeah. Something like that. Before we get into the full circle moment, we're going to do a little quick fit check. But I assume, are you in head to toe, Balencii? Uh, hat is not Balenciaga.

0:55.7

I got at a tourist store in Japan. Quick fit check, but I assume, are you in head to toe, Balenci?

0:55.7

Hat is not Balenciaga. I got at a tourist store in Japan the other week.

0:58.9

Oh, nice.

0:59.4

Wait, the Jamaica.

1:01.7

That's not, that's like the, like the sandals resort hat is from Japan?

1:06.4

2:03.0

Rock shark, Kingston, Jamaica, trademark. And is that your, is that your distressing? No, came this way. Really, you know, the pieces like this, you always wonder, who designed it? A child probably. Yeah. Or I guess a child would probably do the distressing. You know, it's kind of missing is, um, I have one, but it's a red striped and it has the bottle opener on it, like on the brim. That would be on brand for this hat. Wait, how much does a hat like that run you in the end? Definitely less than 10 U.S. dollars. Okay. I went with the rest of the fit. Yeah. Braclet I got at this store in Berlin. It's like this old guy who has this punk store just sells bracelets, belts, chokers, stuff like that. All the hardware is deadstock from the 80s. Nice. So that's pretty cool. Bracelet is a sample soloist bracelet. It's like sterling silver that's been painted. Oh, far. And I got that soloist going out of business. So when I was in Japan, they liquidated all of their remaining samples.

2:03.6

Right.

2:06.6

And it's a brand I haven't been into for quite a while.

2:09.7

But they did happen to have some pretty nostalgic things that I picked up. You a number nine guy?

2:11.2

Not a number nine guy.

2:12.4

I definitely was into soloists like I would say from fall 2018 until spring 2020. Just those seasons personally. Just those three. Yeah. What about the T? Everything else is Belenciaga. Belt, chains, everything. Yeah. All right. Except the Nike elites. Okay. Nice. Oh. Panties? I'm not sure. Oh, Uniclo. Okay. Yeah. If we called the number on the free styling tips number, and you're sure where would it go to? I don't know if it's still active, but Balenciaga made a hotline and it was a bunch of styling tips that Demna had picked out. Yeah. What are some examples? Wear shoes that are too big. Did you take that advice? Oh, you did. They fit me, but they're definitely visually on the larger side.

3:27.1

Oh, you did? They fit me, but they're definitely visually on the larger side. Oh, like wear shoes that don't fit you that are run oversized? And put like insoles in them. Yeah. To get the look. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. Okay. All right, shout out to Demmon and all of his styling tips, free ones for the audience at home. I don't remember the other ones, but they're pretty fun. Yeah. Are they all like wear shit all fucked up and shit? It's stuff like that. It's fun. Okay. Well, Mike, let's get into the meeting. You mentioned this. You came on Fashion Rose with Austin ass pizza butts back in 2015. What have you been up to the last 11 or 12 years? I think he dropped that name. It goes by Austin Babbitt now. Oh, that's right. His real
