Summary

The early/mid-90s were sort of a golden age for sports comedies aimed at kids, but The Mighty Ducks was initially conceived as something a little bit more grown up. The tone of the original script was more in line with The Bad News Bears than the family-friendly Disney film it morphed into. We had clearer memories of D2 going into this, so it was surprising to see how many traces of that other version are still evident here - and how dramatically they help differentiate this movie from the next one in the series.

Topics include: some conflicting opinions over the effectiveness of Gordon's back story, the Ducks who carry over into the sequels and those who get left behind, the simple reason that Coach Reilly is the best antagonist in the franchise, how Hans affords that castle, a few ideas about how to streamline a very chaotic second act, an introduction to some new games, the return of an old favorite, and much much more!

Thank you. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting The Mighty Ducks. Just Win proclaims the vanity plate on Gordon Bombay's flashy Corvette, but this hot shot lawyer's winning streak comes to a screeching halt when he's arrested for drinking and driving.

And what do we do with narcissistic dickbags who make bad decisions that endanger the lives of innocent people?

Put them in charge of our children,

with no equipment, no rink, and no chance. Turns out their misanthropic new coach is pretty

damn good on the ice, but before he can show them the ropes, he'll have to confront the real

reason he hasn't laced up his skates for 20 years. It's probably the only Disney movie that

will ever open with a DUI, but the truth is, The Mighty Ducks was originally intended to be

even edgier. Screenwriter Stephen Brill's earlier drafts had a lot more in common with the

bad news bears than it did with more contemporary kids sports comedies like Rookie of the Year or the Sandlot.

But once the Mouse House bought the script and continued to develop the project, the mandate was clear.

The humor had to be broader and the more adult elements had to be toned down.

The attempts to make it more palatable may have made it less interesting to critics at

sequels and an animated series, The Mighty Ducks also has the distinction of being the only
