Summary

Today, we’re doing something a little different, as unprecedented times call for unprecedented podcasts. This episode is in response to the many listeners who have asked for help in better understanding the history and context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Join Resident Bible Scholar Erin Moon as she explores listener questions and deep-dives the history of the region through a religious lens to provide context for what you’re hearing on the news and seeing in your feeds.

We understand that we bring a bias to this conversation, so we enlisted the help of several sensitivity listeners of various backgrounds to educate and enlighten about our own blindspots and biases. We’re so thankful for their help in shaping this episode. Be sure to check out the resources below to further your own research.

Hello and welcome to a very special episode of Faith adjacent. I'm your host and resident

0:17.4

Bible scholar Aaron Moon. Today we're doing something a little bit different as unprecedented

0:22.6

times call for unprecedented podcast. Throughout the last couple of weeks we've had several

0:29.1

listeners reach out and ask for some help understanding the history and religious context

0:35.1

of the Palestinian Israeli conflict that rose to a fever pitch on October 7th of this

0:41.2

year with the terrorist invasion of Hamas into Israel. We wanted to make this explainer,

0:47.7

this primer for our audience in the hopes that it could provide background for comprehending

0:53.6

some of the current events through a religious lens. But before we dive in I wanted to offer a

1:00.1

little disclaimer. Obviously I, Aaron Moon, bring a certain bias to this conversation. I'm a white

1:07.7

woman with a middle class American evangelical upbringing and because of that upbringing a lot of

1:14.2

my youth was spent hearing about how America is pro-Israel all the time no matter what. As an adult who

1:21.7

has been deconstructing a lot of my evangelical education I've worked to untangle some of that

1:28.2

and separate the people of God from the governments that lead them. Now the group that I identify with

1:34.6

Christians particularly the white American brand have really not brought a ton to the table in

1:40.2

this discussion except for white supremacy and more damage. So I recognize that my opinions here

1:47.6

do not hold much water and the purpose of this episode is not really to share that opinion with you.

1:54.0

But it is more hopefully to give context for what you're hearing about on the news and seeing

1:59.9

in your feeds. But I share this with you because it might help to know where I'm coming from and what

2:05.7

I'm learning so that you understand the lens through which I am processing all this and you can

2:10.1

apply that information to what I'm sharing. But I say all of this to offer context. I am not

2:17.5

a PhD scholar in Middle Eastern relations. I will absolutely get some of this wrong. But I want to

2:25.6

thank our sensitivity listeners of both Jewish and Palestinian backgrounds who helped us craft
