Summary

Former FBI agent Candice DeLong looks into the case behind one of the biggest media sensations of the 90’s: the Menendez brothers. After the brutal killing of their parents, Lyle and Erik Menendez were thrust into the national spotlight. Candice delves into the allegations of psychological, physical and sexual abuse, and what effect it had on their state of mind. Candice also weighs in on how attitudes about the long term psychological effects on abuse victims have changed, and why this case has inspired a whole new generation to demand a new trial.

I have a confession. Until recently, I had never looked at the social media platform TikTok. I thought it was just dance videos and funny pets. However, a few months ago, I saw a 2020 special about these TikTokers that were determined to free the Menenda's Brothers.

I was flabbergasted. How do these young people have any idea who these guys are? They weren't even born in 1989. That's when the Menenda's Brothers, Eric and Lyle, were charged with murdering their parents in Beverly Hills, California.

Their videos had started out as anthems to the Brothers, talking about how hot they were and showing pictures of the Brothers when they were young.

The videos then evolved into a social movement, a movement to get the Menenda's Brothers a new trial.

I got a hand at them. They seemed to have done their homework. Apparently, they spent hours watching old court TV footage. The stuff I watched live in 1993 when the trial took place.

So, why did they take up this cause now and with such passion? Well, from what I was seeing on social media, apparently they felt like they could relate to the abuse the Menenda's Brothers reportedly suffered at the hands of their parents, Jose and Kitty, and how they struggled with years of abuse in their home.

Back then, the abuse didn't track for me. I remember thinking to myself, well, that's convenient. It's been four years. Why didn't it come out until now?

But with this case, sparking the curiosity of a new generation, I felt compelled to take a new look at the Menenda's Brothers.

The trial was in the early 90s and our thoughts and studies on abuse have come a long ways since then. This new information was making me rethink my opinion.

But as I searched through the case, questions kept popping up. What could have made these boys who seemingly had everything so angry that they would kill their parents in such a horrific manner?

2:32.0

Did they really feel like they had no other options? Was it all about the money or were they truly terrified and just snapped?
