By all accounts, Lyle Menendez admired his father more than anyone in the world. And his favorite story of the tale was how Jose Menendez worked hard to earn what would have been considered the American dream.

Jose was born in Cuba to well-off parents, but when Castro came to power, his parents sent him the Hazelton, Pennsylvania to live in the attic of his cousin's house. He was only 16 years old.

Jose enrolled in high school and became the school star swimmer, earning him a scholarship to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
