It's summer 1976 at McDonald's Canada headquarters in Toronto, Ontario.

George Kohan walks into his office soaking in the side of his many employees and

the sounds of phones ringing nonstop. George remembers when the headquarters

for McDonald's Canada was just one room that he worked in by himself. Now with

over 300 Canadian McDonald's locations and operations businesses booming.

But George has even bigger plans for the future. As George steps into his office,

he closes the door behind him. Normally George keeps it open so people can pop

in and chat. But today he's making an important call to McDonald's corporation CEO Fred

Turner and he doesn't want to be disturbed. George has a big new idea to bring McDonald's

to the Soviet Union. But to pull off this bold maneuver, George has to first convince

Fred it's a good idea. He picks up the phone and makes the call.

Fred Turner. Fred, you're the CEO of a major corporation. You're not supposed to answer

your own phone. You're kidding George. I've been waiting for your call. Rumor is you've

got something big going on. Fred Turner likes big. He became a McDonald's executive in 1958

when the company only had 34 employees. And Fred played a major part in the company's

expansion since. And he likes George too. When George started at McDonald's, he and

Fred formed a fast friendship. After Fred took over as CEO from Ray Crock five years ago

in 1973. George has frequently come to Fred to pitch ideas no matter how big or far fetched.

Well, Fred, I'll be honest. This one might be a bit crazy, but I'm dead serious about it.

Okay. What do you got? I want to open McDonald's restaurants in the Soviet Union.
