Summary

On May 19, 1920 The Stone Mountain Coal Mine Corporation sent hired guns into Matewan, West Virgina to squash attempts by Coal Miners to unionize. This lead to a deadly shoot out that became known as the Matewan Massacre.  It was followed a year later by the largest armed rebellion since the civil war, when 10,000 armed Coal Miners took on the coal mining industry's private army at Blair Mountain, West Virgina.
