At the lowest point in her life, Lara Love Hardin was called A Neighbor from Hell. In 2008,

while addicted to heroin, she and her then husband were

arrested and later charged with multiple counts of identity theft. She lost custody of her four

sons and faced up to 27 years in prison. She instead spent 10 months in Santa Cruz County

jail after pleading guilty to 32 felonies as part of a plea deal.

When Laura's life turned upside down, her story was far from over.

I'm Emily Campano, and this is the Fox True Crime podcast. From a young age, Lara demonstrated her impressive abilities with a pen.

She was the first in her family to attend college

and later received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing

from the University of California, Irvine.

While incarcerated, she spent her time writing.

She told her own story and provided a voice for

the other women with whom she spent time behind bars. It was during her time in jail that Lara was

exposed to the harsh realities of incarceration, as well as the emotional toll it would have on her

following her release.

After her release, Laura struggled to find employment and housing due to her criminal record and the logistical challenges of keeping up with parole.
