Today, the making of Kamela Harris.

Inside the life of the woman who may be America's first female president. A few months ago journalist Janelle Ross was given an assignment.

Start to research the life of somebody who was then still a peripheral figure, the Vice President

Kamala Harris.

As is the case, any time that you're writing about someone who is seeking elected office, it is a real challenge to try to get underneath that

person's skin.

There is a version of their life story that they have told and intend to continue telling generally speaking and it's very very rare

that you're going to get anything that differs from that.

Slowly she interviewed old friends hung around campaign events.

A picture started to emerge.

That said, one of the fundamentals is always to just check your basic facts.

So that's where I always start. How long did they

work here? When did they do this? And there inevitably are little things that start to sort of leak out,

right? Like little tiny details. But something else

emerged as well. That while at that point Harris was seen as an underperforming

vice president, even a liability for a campaign led by an 81 year old Joe Biden.

Janelle started to realize that that narrative was out of date.

Quietly over the past two years, Harris has undergone a political transformation. And when Biden stepped down a few weeks ago,

and the Harris campaign burst out of the gates in a blaze of enthusiasm and popularity,

Janelle was not surprised.
