Summary

In episode 519 of the podcast I'm joined by astrologer Reverend Lindsay Turner to discuss the story of the Magi, the birth of Jesus, and the astrology surrounding the Nativity story. We explore the celebration of Epiphany, also known as Three Kings Day, and analyze the Gospel of Matthew's account of the astrologers from the East who followed a star to Bethlehem. We discuss the distinction between approaching the Nativity as a historical event versus a literary narrative, and how the author of Matthew partially used the story of the Magi to legitimize Jesus as a king in the 1st century. We also look at technical astrological terms found in the Greek text, such as anatole or "at its rising," and how this relates to Hellenistic astrology. We also talk about the relationship between early Christianity and astrology, including the non-canonical Acts of Paul and Thecla, the liturgical seasons aligning with the Zodiac, and how modern Christians can reconcile their faith with astrological practice. the magi, the birth of Jesus, and the astrology surrounding the nativity story.

So hey, Lindsay, thanks for joining me again.

0:16.7

Hey, Chris, it's my pleasure to be here.

0:18.6

Thanks for having me.

0:20.7

Yeah, it's been a little while since we talked last time. I think our last episode was one of the Venus retrograde news stories that we did last year, right?

0:27.6

It sure was, yeah, around like April, I think.

0:30.6

Yeah. Well, I think this is a good occasion to talk to you today because today is the celebration of Epiphany or what's known in some

0:40.8

countries as Three Kings Day, which is actually a day when some Christians actually celebrate

0:46.7

the Magi and the traditions surrounding them, right?

0:50.3

Yeah, yeah, it is.

0:51.7

January 6th in the tradition that I come from is when we celebrate Epiphany,

0:56.0

and it is the kind of official end of the 12 days of Christmas and the start of a new liturgical season.

1:03.0

And yeah, it's a celebration of this presentation of Jesus to the world, right?

1:09.0

It's kind of like unveiling or coming out. And the word epiphany comes

1:14.7

from the Greek epiphanine. And it literally means like epi is a pawn and appear and finine is to appear.

1:23.7

And then the earlier roots of that could even mean like to shine or to glitter.

1:27.5

So I think a lot about stars and the astrological tradition too in this context, like

1:33.5

what appeared on the horizon that really drew these magi to this place in this story.

1:40.5

Yeah.

1:41.5

And that's been the question astrologers have been asking themselves for 2,000 years,
