Americans have taken to the streets in cities across the country to protest the

murder of George Floyd at the hands of four

Minnesota police officers. Peaceful protests have taken place in cities large and

small despite the continued threat of a global pandemic, and several

cities have seen days of uprising, leading mayors across America to impose curfews and request the assistance of the National Guard.

In Minneapolis, former officer Derek Chauvin was arrested last week and initially charged with

third-degree murder for the killing of

George Floyd. Jovan pressed his knee into the neck of George Floyd as he lay on the

ground, handcuffed behind his back for nearly nine minutes, despite Floyd's repeated pleas that he could not breathe.

An independent autopsy conducted at the request of the Floyd family has concluded that his cause of death was homicide caused by asphyxia due to neck and back compression that murder. The upgraded charge states that Chauvin killed Floyd without intent in the course of

committing assault in the third degree, according to the complaint. Three other officers at the scene were also fired from their jobs

following Floyd's death, but did not initially face criminal charges.

During the press conference to announce Chauvin's upgraded charges. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison

also announced charges against the other three former officers, identified as Thomas Lane,

J Alexander Kang, and Tutau.

All three men face felony charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder, and aiding and

abetting second-degree manslaughter.

All were taken into custody and each of the four men
