Summary
Loving your family well isn’t always as simple as it sounds. There are seasons when connection feels easy, and others when you feel unseen, unheard, or like your efforts just aren’t landing.
In this episode, Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, shares insights from decades of helping couples and families better understand how to give and receive love. With the release of his latest book, the conversation goes deeper into how love languages can shape stronger, more meaningful relationships at home.
We talk about what to do when you don’t feel loved, how to better understand your spouse and children, and why taking the first step in showing love can shift the entire dynamic of a relationship. There’s also practical wisdom on how to approach hard conversations with care and intentionality.
This episode is a powerful reminder that small, consistent choices in how we love can make a lasting impact on our families.

| 0:13.0 | Hey friends, welcome back to Part of the Mess. I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, and we have such a good interview today. |
| 0:18.5 | I'm completely geeked out that I got to talk to Dr. Harry Chapman, no big deal. But I literally can't believe it's my job. He has helped me so much in my life through his book, The Five Love Languages, and he's got a new follow-up one out called The Love Language that matters most. So we'll talk all about that. But first, I wanted to share a message that I got in my Instagram, DMs from one of you. |
| 0:39.1 | Her name is Hannah. |
| 0:40.3 | And if you don't know, on Thursdays on part of the mess, we do interviews with people like Dr. Gary Chapman. And then on Mondays, it's just me going through a prayer journal with a group of moms. Y'all are out there listening. and I'm leading us through just a simple prayer every week of the school year for our kids and our families. |
| 0:56.4 | And so one week, we did a prayer about... they're listening, and I'm leading us through just a simple prayer every week of the school year |
| 0:54.6 | for our kids and our families. And so one week, we did a prayer about generosity, that God would |
| 1:00.5 | work in our kids' hearts, that he would give them a moment to choose generosity, and that God would |
| 1:05.2 | be glorified through that. And so this just made my day. Hannah said, I had just finished listening |
| 1:10.1 | to the generosity prayer for our kids, |
| 1:12.1 | and my daughter came home the same day and said she wants to give all of her fidgets to a girl |
| 1:17.4 | who needs them in class. The little girl said, even though she yells at me, God told me to, |
| 1:22.4 | and it makes me feel happy thinking about giving it to her, so I know that I should. So she went |
| 1:27.2 | home, packed a bag of |
| 1:28.2 | fidgets, and took them to school with her today. Wow. Same day I prayed, God spoke to her heart. |
| 1:34.2 | Isn't that amazing? So guys, we have to keep praying. We don't know how and when God is going to |
| 1:39.3 | answer, but we can pray very specifically. Like, Lord, give my child an opportunity today to love on others, |
| 1:45.7 | or God, show my child today that God loves them so specifically. And so don't forget to keep praying. |
| 1:51.2 | It matters. And just like Hannah is saying, it can show up that very day in our kids' hearts. |
| 1:56.1 | And so keep praying. So Dr. Gary Chapman, y'all, he's 88 years old. I was looking at him and thinking, like, I know I read that book in the 90s, and he's still out there counseling. He's been counseling families for over 30 years. He's been married over 60 years. And this idea of the love languages, if you don't know it. It's like we literally speak different languages. |
| 2:17.5 | So where I really feel loved with words of affirmation, Ron feels love with quality time. |
