Theories about their origin range from extraterrestrial visitors and demonic entities to something far stranger. Some believe these beings are emissaries of the devil himself, and that inviting them in allows something truly evil to cross your threshold.

Though some say the legend dates back to the 1980s, most trace its roots to 1996, when Texas journalist Brian Bethel published his own terrifying encounter with these sinister children.
