Chapter 19. Pandering to Morbidity

Soon after Thanksgiving, when Jesse and Sanford Clark had been reunited once more over the dinner table,

Gordon Stewart Northcott left his cell in Ocala Prison dressed in a large coat and cap.

He was escorted by four officers from the rural Canadian Mounted Police.

Upon his arrival in Vancouver, he was greeted by head of the Los Angeles Homicide Squad

Captain William Bright, Chief Deputy District Attorney of Riverside Earl Redwine,

special investigator for the Sheriff's Office at Riverside James Quinn

and Chief Investigator for the Riverside District Attorney Albert Kelly.

It was hoped that Northcott's first trial for the murder of the unidentified teenager

would be scheduled in three weeks.

Despite his previous insistence that he was going to be represented by Canadian attorney Frank Lyons

along with a menagerie of other legal experts, Northcote would need to find new counsel once he

arrived on US soil. He protested continually throughout the journey as he was used to getting his own way.

Regardless, Northcart was eventually transported over the border and the engines of the small convoy

came to a standstill in Bellingham, Washington.

One of the vehicles had broken down.

It was a welcome opportunity for the officers to get some rest,

and they decided to stop at a hotel after the arduous journey.

Famished they each tucked into some bread and soup.
