Chapter 12. Chicken Feed

The End of September 12, Chicken Feed.

At the end of September 1928, another grand jury was ordered to convene in California.

This investigation would not focus on the charges against Louise Northcott and her son,

but on another mother, Christine Collins.

The order was made to review the actions of Captain Jones and his colleagues at the Los Angeles

Police Department, after Christine was detained and sectioned when she refused to accept that a boy in

her care was her son.

She had been certain the youth, now identified as Arthur Hutchins Jr. of Iowa was not

Walter, although she was convinced and coerced by the police. Before a grand jury, Christine spoke of how

she contacted the office of Captain Jones on September 8th,

almost a month to the day since she was first handed the photograph of a boy who was suspected

of being her son. After meeting him for the first time, Christine knew the child was not Walter,

although she had reluctantly agreed to look after him.

She had been interviewed about the interaction, and the conversation was published in the St. Louis

Post Dispatch and the Kansas City Star. I was waiting for him when a big detective came in with a little bit of a boy.

I paid no attention to them at all.

Then they came up and told me that was my Walter,

except in a general way he didn't resemble my boy at all.
