September 20th, 1928 was a big news day.

Along with the announcement that Stuart Northcott and his mother Louise were now in custody,

another bombshell in the investigation was fed to waiting reporters.

The young boy returned from Illinois into the arms of a bereft Christine Collins had come clean.

Christine was right. The child was not her son Walter, but an imposter. The boy alleged that his real

parents were dead, however he would not reveal his true identity claiming he could not remember.

The child admitted that the story he had originally told the police was a total fabrication. Before that

train journey to meet Christine Collins at the station, he had never even set foot in California.

The idea for the hoax supposedly came to him after speaking with locals in DeKalb, Illinois,

and reading newspaper reports on the case of Walter Collins, a missing boy near his age

whose mother desperately wanted him to come home.
