A few Halfling hippies assemble an eclectic fellowship and go on the adventure of a lifetime. Dads and daddies abound. We talk Hobbits, fan fiction, thirsting for Viggo, and The Lord of the Rings with our pal Talia Lavin. You can find Talia's book Culture Warlords here (https://www.hachettebooks.com/titles/talia-lavin/culture-warlords/9780306846434/). (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7xzO4hWx8p7xShWgOchIO5?si=S2uufyjDTFWMfBiL1ZM9DQ) It's comprised of songs that come to mind when we all think about this movie. Why Are Dads (https://www.podpage.com/why-are-dads/) is a show in which hosts Sarah Marshall and Alex Steed attempt to understand what the hell it means to be the grown children of dads and other dad-like figures. And, as they do with all difficult subject matter, they do so by looking through a pop culture lens. You can find us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/whyaredads), Instagram (https://instagram.com/whyaredads) and Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/whyaredads). You can find producer and music director Carolyn Kendrick's music here. (fanlink.to/ctuc) She's also on Twitter (https://twitter.com/carekendrick). Tallian knows. Tallian knows. But this is the intro, so she's not here yet. You're listening to Why Are Duds, a show where we find excuses to talk about things if they're tangentially related to dads.

0:42.0

Yeah, and dads are everywhere, so we can talk about whatever we want, but we do stick to movies. So what did we talk about today, Sarah?

0:49.0

We talked about Peter Jackson's Lure to the Rings trilogy, not Ralph Beck. She's equally consequential film, and we talked about it with Tallia Leven, which was a great joy because she is actually from Middle Earth, originally deep down inside.

1:05.0

Yeah, spiritually Tallia is from Middle Earth. Yes. Like, she grew up there, she knows what it's like, and she's telling us about it, and we are talking about the dad's situation over there.

I would say buff. Yeah, that's that's more appropriate.

1:36.0

And Tallia is the you of Lord of the Rings. Oh, yeah, that's very true. Specifically in the sense that she and I both at roughly the same age were like very into the fan fiction worlds of these movies, you know, the experience of having a world to be a part of and to continue to make a new

and a time when you don't have a ton of power in your life as I think very special. And I feel like I'm a big evangelist for fan fiction. I think if more kids were writing fan fiction, they wouldn't have time to do other stuff.

2:10.0

I don't mean sex. I mean scary internet stuff that I'm scared of.

2:16.0

And that's so fascinating in the context of Tallia because Tallia talks about this in the episode.

2:21.0

And Tallia is like the grand dam of scary internet stuff journalistically. Right. Both Tallia and you learned how to write for the public through fan fiction.

2:31.0

Totally. As you just said, it keeps you out of scary internet stuff. Tallia is is an expert on scary internet stuff. And that has a cross section that comes up in her book Culture Warlords with Nordic mythology.

2:45.0

There's intersections all over the place in this in this episode. And I love it. And one thing we weren't able to get to one thing we had to cut out of the episode because we just talked about a non stop was how Brad Dorif is in our friend Brad Dorf.

3:04.0

And all that I'm going to ask you in a second to explain who this is, but our friend bad Brad Dorif. Bad Dorif. Bad Dorif makes an appearance in the first of the trilogy, first movie of the trilogy.
