But today, I want to talk about a document you've probably never heard of, one that is now

on display at the Library of Congress.

It is a 14-page handwritten document

written in exquisite Spencerian script about a fundamental institution in American life.

Baseball.

This particular document is part of a large exhibit called Baseball Americana, and it is the earliest set of official rules for baseball that we know of. The document was composed back in the 1800s by a convention of gentlemen who gathered to ordain and establish the fundamentals of America's pastime.

They titled this document, quote, the laws of baseball.
