What these individual reports reveal is just how much discretion law enforcement has while policing the border.

And under the Trump administration's recent policy changes, these powers have expanded even more.

Human rights groups have complained for months that border agents are wrongfully turning away people seeking asylum in the U.S.

The Trump administration began hearings Monday in makeshift tent courthouses in South Texas.

Customs and Border Protection is advancing a program that allows border patrol agents to conduct

the first interview in the asylum process.

While historically there have been few attempts to increase oversight or reform, the government

once actually did investigate the way policing happened on the border,

but that was over 100 years ago.
