John Hosak was born on May 26, 1841 in Ross Shire, Scotland, and in 1842, emigrated with his family to Canada and later to Illinois.

It was here that in the spring of 1866, John found work with Alexander Murchison in Stark County and became one of the man's many hired hands.

While living and working on the Murchison farm, John became acquainted with Alexander's children.
