I was in the garden of 10 Downing Street this week.

The wine was flowing, the sun was hot,

the conversation hotter still.

And yet somehow, when the Prime Minister walked in

to greet the political journalists

of the annual lobby drinks,

there wasn't the sense of moment,

the sense of jeopardy,

which you might have expected,

given the extraordinary events

of recent days and weeks.

And yet imagine, if a few weeks ago,

I had suggested the foreign secretary would quit.

Good evening from Westminster,

where Theresa May has been fighting

to maintain support for her Brexit strategy,

following the resignation of Boris Johnson

as foreign secretary.

The Brexit Secretary would quit.

Within the past few minutes,

the Brexit Secretary has resigned from the government.
