Summary

“The Bisara of Pooree”: Set in 1891 British India, Major John Churton is riding a streak of bad luck — a robbery, the death of his horse, a rejected invention — when he becomes engaged to the woman of his dreams, Millicent Hollis. His old friend Tom Futon recognizes the source of the trouble: a small silver box called the Bissara of Puri, containing a tiny eyeless wooden fish, which Churton unknowingly purchased in a bazaar. According to legend, the Bissara brings ruin to those who buy it — but grants the heart's desire to those who steal it.
