Once upon a time there was a woman who learned too late in life to listen to her instincts.

Manners.

Girls are taught that above all no matter the situation or circumstance, the thing that

will make us appreciated and valued and successful, is our ability to make everyone around us

more comfortable, to put everyone at ease, to tell others their word and deed that their

happiness, however fleeting, is more important than our own.

The older we get, the deeper this gets entrenched.

Sloppy kisses from tipsy uncles, well, don't squirm away, leering glances and uncomfortable

touches from a friend's dad or a teacher, well, don't get him in trouble now.

In appropriate compliments from strangers and a long elevator ride, just say thank you.

Don't piss him off.

We do it because we are taught that it's our role.

We're taught it's our burden.

We're taught that it's just good manners.

I was certainly raised with these manners.
