These conversations are stored in our sound archive at the British Library, and the BBC

broadcasts a selection of these chats just a few minutes at a time.

Back in November 2015, the listening project teamed up with Oxfam to travel to Beirut to record

important conversations there amongst the ever-growing refugee population. These are people

who left Syria over the last few years, those whose lives are still in limbo but who live in Lebanon now.

All of them wanted to join the listening project, to share a conversation with someone they love,

but to let us hear that too. And a whole world of human experience

comes your way in the next half an hour, lyrical young love, the pains of

parenting, the joy of a good friend. All of these chats were recorded by our producer Connor Garrett,

who travelled to Beirut to meet people like cousins Hannah and Rana.

Hannah is 30, Rana 27,

and they fled Syria two years ago. Back home, Hannah studied business

and was a teacher. Rana was a nurse and although Hana has managed to find a job in

a cafe, Rana is still looking for work.

Hannah begins this part of their chat.

I've always wore nice clothes.

I like to be neat and clean. Should I look poor just so I look like a refugee?

What do they think refugees are?

That they're worthless. A refugee is a person who should be able to respect themselves like everyone else.
