Summary

Former FBI Agent Candice DeLong takes a look back at one of the most memorable cases she studied. From the haunting message the killer scrawled in lipstick on the wall of the female victim’s apartment in Chicago in 1945, the press nicknamed him “The Lipstick Killer.” Candice unravels how the murderer, William Heirens, escalated his criminal career from seemingly petty “nuisance crimes” to sexually-motived homicides.

I remember when I first saw the crime scene photo, I'll never forget.

I was in a classroom at the FBI, introduction to crime scene analysis, taught by the now famous Robert Ressler.

A big part of our training and profiling school was reviewing past homicides. They would put pictures up on the screen and discuss what happened, but they wouldn't tell us who the killer turned out to be.

0:59.0

We would analyze and look for clues to the offender's personality and lifestyle.

I always sat up front so I would have the best perspective and that's why this one is seared into my memory.

In the corner of the room was a radiator with a cover on it and there was a house plant on the radiator.

There was also a small side table on it was some kind of clock, probably an alarm clock and what looked like sheets piled up.

1:37.0

I've seen hundreds of crime scene photographs and sadly hundreds of murder victims. The thing that was most jarring wasn't a body, there wasn't nobody.

1:47.0

It wasn't blood, there wasn't any of that either. It was something written on the wall in lipstick. A message.

1:55.0

It said, for heaven's sake, catch me before I kill again. I cannot stop myself.

2:02.0

It looked like something a young child would write who's just learning the alphabet. Some words were misspelled, one letter was actually backwards.

2:13.0

Certainly whoever did this was an adult but why are they writing like this? What really hit me was the content of this message.

2:24.0

Was it a confession? Was it a plea for help? Or was it a challenge?

2:31.0

This case was studied by the behavioral science unit and my class because it was a perfect example of how not all burglaries are what they seem.

2:41.0

By the time the killer was apprehended, he had already killed three females, two adults and a child.
