Jim knew something was wrong, the second he saw the closed bedroom door.

A six-year-old daughter, Suzanne, always left it open at night.

It was the kind of thing only a parent would notice, obsessed with every detail of how

their child slept and what made them afraid.

Curious and perhaps a little worried, Jim opened Suzanne's door and saw the worst thing

a parent could see.

Nothing.

No sign of Suzanne anywhere in the small room.

It took a minute for Jim to process what he was seeing.

Suzanne's window was wide open, cold winter air swirling through the room.

As his gaze flitted around the room, he saw only the empty bed and the open window.

No sign that anyone else had been in the room.

But of course, someone had.
