Welcome to Let It Be Easy with Susie Moore. Earlier this year I was hired to give a presentation to celebrate International Women's Month in New York at a investment bank

and it was really fun. I love the experience. I loved meeting the women there.

And the theme of the presentation was the art of self-advocating.

So that essentially means communicating your needs, right?

Speaking up for yourself, using your voice, not holding back,

addressing and making important, making your needs important enough so that other people can know about them too.

So that you're not hinting or hoping or waiting or praying for your needs to be met, you're actively

taking a role in representing yourself and advocating on your own behalf.

Now I received a couple of really good questions that day and I want to share with you what one of them was because I think it's so helpful for us to come back to the truth of this whenever we think maybe we're not

making an impact or whenever we think that you know showing others you know teaching

others helping others has to be a big complicated thing.

The question that I was asked was from a lady who said how do I teach my daughters to self-advocate?

They're young, right, they're going through a lot of life changes,

you know, school stuff, activity stuff, stuff with friends, etc, etc. She's like like how do I pass this information on to them?

Was a great question, a generous question, a very open-hearted question.

And my answer was what it always is when it comes to how can we impact others.

My answer to her was, the best way you can teach your children to advocate for themselves,

your daughters to advocate for themselves, is for you to model it. That's it. We need real life role models. In an ideal world

it's our mother right that primary figure in our life. But it doesn't matter.

It can even be a stranger, observing a stranger doing the right thing, for example, or observing

a coworker whose name you don't even know, showing up and presenting themselves

asking questions that others are too uncomfortable to ask.
