The discernment of spirits is based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I suppose we should give him some special attention

before we begin to find out who it is that was led to this inspiring gift for us all.

It was the remarkable gift of St. Ignatius, who is a 16th century Spaniard,

one of the great figures of holiness in Spain at that time, St. Teresa Vavala and John of the

Cross came a little bit, just a few years later, that he not only had spiritual experience,

as we all do, the ups and downs that we described last time we

were speaking, but he was attentive to it and was able to formulate it into words.

Toward the end of his life, he told one of his Jesuit companions that, and certainly

what has to be one of the great understatements in our Catholic spiritual tradition

that he wrote the exercises because he thought that some things that he had found in his own
