Tomorrow, the 12th of May, marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the most significant figures in the history of medicine, Florence Nightingale.

To mark the bicentenary, I spoke to Mark Bostrich, a biographer of Nightingale, about the life, legacy and wide-ranging achievements of The Lady with the Lamp. Could you start as off by giving a very quick rundown of some of the key events in Florence Nightingale's life. How did she become

the lady with the lamp? Right. Well, she was born 200 years ago on May the 12th, 1820,

in an area outside Florence known as Bella's Guardo, because her parents were on a sort of European tour.

She came back to her father's estates in Derbyshire the following year.

The Nightingales were a wealthy family.

Florence Nightingale was a second child.

Her older sister had arrived in 1819 a year before her. But from a very

early age, it was clear that it was Florence Nightingale who was remarkable for her intellect. Her
