And the The Welcome to 1, 2001 Classic Short Stories and Tales and Part 2 of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the first widely recognized

short story by an American writer, and one that's been enjoyed by generations since its release

in 1820.

You may have seen the made-for TV version in 1980 with Jeff Goldblum, playing a

nerdish Icabod Crane, with football star Dick Butchis, playing an appropriately nasty brombones, and Meg Foster

as the spirited Katrina Van Tassal, or the animated Disney version, or others, and they're all

well done, but none can compare with the written word in this case.

Washington Irving has an excellent way with words and descriptive phrases,

and this beloved story of a traveling teacher competing with the local bully for the affections of a young Dutch made in colonial New England deserves its place among the classics.

We join the story as Icabod Crane having just received notice that there was a community event taking place in a nearby village at which the girl of his affections would be present saddles up old gunpowder for a ride to the deep woods to join in on the

festivities and hopefully win her heart away from his adversary the cunning

crafty and troublemaking brombones.
