Catechism Question number 15 is what we're talking about today.

Short episode. Why did God give us a law if we cannot keep it?

What's the point of it?

Think about stories like the rich young ruler,

where the rich young ruler comes up to Jesus and is like,

hey, what do I got to do to inherit eternal life?

I've done everything. I've obeyed the law since I was a child.

What am I lacking?

Jesus is like, well, you're lacking this.

Take all your possessions, sell them, give the money to the poor.

Is Jesus saying that this young man and us are not allowed to have possessions, that we got

to give up everything and we got to live in poverty in order

to obey God in order to get to heaven?

No.

He's showing us what the law is really for, what the law is all about.

You see, the rich young ruler, he came up to Jesus thinking, I don't commit idolatry,

I don't do anything wrong.

And Jesus is like, okay, well, then sell all your stuff. And then he walks away sad because the rich, young ruler is like, I can't do that.

I can't, I can't sell all my stuff.

Bingo, idolatry.

He wasn't worshipping at any pagan temples, but he was worshiping at the temple of possessions
