It's nearly dawn in the dead of winter, in a little log cabin, high in the mountains

above central Oregon.

Two men huddle against the cold, wrapped in blankets by the fireplace.

While a third cooks a hearty breakfast on a wood stove by candlelight, the sun has yet to rise.

Outside the cabin, there is nothing but miles upon miles of snow and wind and darkened forest.

Nothing on two legs should be anywhere near them, and yet there comes a knocking at the cabin door.

Gentle at first, but steadily growing in urgency.

Who on earth could be out there in all that darkness and freezing wind. Months later, the bodies of the three men are found shot and mutilated beneath a frozen lake.

A century later, a small mountain community still asks, Who among us really took our brothers, husbands, sons, and friends from us?

Strap on your snow shoes. Today we're heading up to lava lake.
