My name is Jeff, and today Matt and I are going to be doing a bit of an update on a bunch of mountain bike advocacy issues.

0:31.3

So over the last year, two years, there's been a number of advocacy things coming up in the mountain bike world

0:38.2

from bikes in wilderness to the way that mountain bike clubs are organized. And so we're going to take

0:46.3

some time. A lot of this stuff has changed actually just in the last couple of months. So we're

0:50.4

going to try to update everyone on these various issues. So before we talk about some of these specific issues, I wanted us to define some terms and sort of talk about general advocacy stuff.

1:05.0

1:41.2

for an area that is protected and under current sort of interpretation of

1:47.5

the wilderness rules and regulations, that means no bicycles are allowed. So essentially these

1:54.0

wilderness study areas have begun while they're not wilderness yet. They've started to be treated as wilderness, and so

2:02.9

bikes are not allowed, even when an area is under study, even if it's not a wilderness area yet.

2:08.4

So there's another similar designation called a recommended wilderness area, an RWA.

2:15.1

And again, it's the same idea that an area is recommended for wilderness designation. It hasn't been officially approved yet. But again, the lawyers and various people who interpret these rules have decided that if an area is recommended for wilderness, that's it, no more bikes, even though,

2:35.5

again, it's not officially.
