Well, our Psalm today, Psalm 118, is one of the most quoted, not just Psalms, but passages in the Old Testament

in the New Testament, over a dozen times quoted by New Testament writers.

And it has a prominent place, not just in the New Testament,

but in the human story. I mean, if you think about the fact that the Jewish people sang this song

multiple times each year for centuries, you realize the song we just read is in the running for one of

the most sung songs in all of human history.

And not only that, it's also very likely the last song that Jesus ever sang before he died.

I wish we knew what Jesus's singing voice sounded like. We don't, but we know we sang.

Matthew tells us that.

In Matthew 26, it says of him and his disciples at the end of the last supper.

The Passover meal he met with his disciples.

He then left to the Mount of Olives where he was going to be arrested, betrayed, crucified.

It says this in Matthew 2630.

And when they had sung a hymn,

they went out to the Mount of Olives. He sang on his way to his arrest. And we can be fairly

confidently. We know what song he sang, because it's the one we just read, is the last song in a series

of Psalms called the Egyptian halel. They were sung at the end

of the celebration of the Passover. So centuries, these songs were sung at the end of the Passover

meal, Psalm 118 being the last one. And it wasn't just the last one. It was called the great
