Hitchhiking in the 1960s and 70s was a common mode of transportation.

One that allowed you to meet new people, take new routes and get out of town for a while.

In beach towns up and down the coast of Florida, Hitchhikers constantly lined the roads,

looking for a way to make it to the beach.

In a small Florida suburb, two teenage girls eager to explore the world outside of their

hometown, decided to place their trust in a man who was offering them a free ride to anywhere.

Unfortunately for the two girls, they would never reach their intended destination,

and their families would never see them alive again.

This case takes us to St. Lucie County, Florida, most commonly recognized for its beaches.

Many visitors to the Florida coast pass by completely unaware of the marshes, swamps,

and jungle-like forests that are settled off the beachfront.

Between the oceanfront and the inner cities on the beach sides of Florida,

lay marshes filled with mangrove trees, swampy waters, and difficult terrain.

At the time, the events of this case took place, much of the land in the area was still undeveloped,

making it nearly impossible to navigate, unless you grew up in the area.

Unseen dangers lurked under every exposed mangrove route.
