In the quiet town of Aiken, South Carolina, a deeply unsettling case unfolded that would bring to light severe violations of privacy and trust.

This case centers around Rett C. Riviere, a prominent local socialite and landlord, who was found to have secretly recorded tenants in his rental properties over a span of two decades.

The discovery of his actions led to a landmark legal battle

culminating in a substantial jury verdict

that underscored the gravity of his offenses.

In 2001, Heather and Gabriel Crespo rented a cottage owned by Riviere and Aiken.

Unbeknownst to them,

Rivier had installed hidden cameras in the bedroom and bathroom of the property,

capturing intimate moments without their consent.

This invasion of privacy remained undiscovered for nearly two decades.

The illicit recordings came to light in 2019, when Rivier's ex-fiancee discovered micro-SD cards containing videos of unsuspecting individuals,

including the Crespo's, in various states of undress.

Alarmed by her discovery, she reported the matter to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, S-L-E-D.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Riviere had amassed approximately 3.7

terabytes of video data over two decades involving recordings of over 20,000 renters across

multiple properties. Upon learning of the recordings in 2021, the Crespo's filed a lawsuit

against Rivier, alleging invasion of privacy and seeking

damages for the emotional distress caused by his actions. The case proceeded to trial in Aiken County,

where the jury was presented with evidence of Riviere's extensive, voyeuristic activities.

On September 25, 2004, the jury awarded the Crespo's $27 million in compensatory damages.

The following day, they added $18 million in punitive damages, bringing the total verdict
