Based on the comic book series of the same name, the film tells the story of three Hell's Kitchen housewives whose mobster

husbands are sent to prison by the FBI in 1978. Forced to take matters into their own

hands, the women proved to be unexpectedly adept at mob life, running the gangs and taking

out the competition. The Kitchen is Ms. Berloff's directorial debut. Following a recent screening of the film at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles,

Ms. Berloff spoke with director Lisa Cholodenko about filming The Kitchen.

During their conversation, she discusses her approach to the soundtrack of the movie and the big swings she took,

the experience of prepping for her first

theatrical film, and specifically casting against type for actors like Tiffany Haddish and Donald

Gleason.
