It was a dark and stormy night.

The date was November 23rd, 1953.

It was dark, and yes, it was stormy.

Our story begins in a room and a building on the Kinross Air Force Base in northern Michigan

in the upper peninsula part of the state.

A sense of grim and tangible foreboding hung over the Air Force base as the weather outside

did stormy things. Suddenly the stillness of the room was shattered by the jangling ear-piercing

ring of a telephone. Body's frozen place and all eyes in the room swiveled to stare at

the device. Seemingly an embodiment of pure malevolence. One ring.

A long pause.

The second ring.

But no one made a move to pick up the receiver.

Three rings.

Still, no one could muster the courage to confront the awful dark truths,

the inevitable doom that might be spoken by a teenyny voice on the far end of the line.

Four rings.

Suddenly a man in uniform threw caution to the wind and picked up the phone.

As he put the receiver to his ear, he heard a voice, wanted to know why to take it so goddamn long to answer the phone.

What the hell wasn't anybody picking up the goddamn phone.

It is a dark and stormy night, he wanted to say.
