Summary

Wall Street Journal media reporter Keach Hagey talks with Recode’s Peter Kafka about her new book, “The King of Content: Sumner Redstone’s Battle for Viacom, CBS, and Everlasting Control of His Media Empire.” Hagey says that, like the Murdochs, Redstone’s family is embroiled in “soap opera drama” as they work out what happens to a company once dominated by a single patriarch-mogul. She talks about why the people closest to Sumner Redstone did not disclose his declining mental health to shareholders and what sets his daughter, Shari Redstone, who controls both CBS and Viacom, apart from others in that circle. Plus: Hagey discusses Disney’s aborted attempt to buy Vice and why she thinks 21st Century Fox would rather sell to Disney than to Comcast. Learn more about your ad choices. That is me. I am part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. I'm here at Vox Media headquarters in New York City all the way downtown, very far from the Wall Street Journal offices. So I'm very grateful that Kichagie came to visit us. Kichita, I didn't pronounce your last name correctly. That's right. The first name I got. Welcome. Thanks for having me. You are one of the kick-ass media reporters at the Wall Street Journal.

0:55.5

You have a kick-ass book called The King of Content, all about Sunder Redstone. Great time to be promoting a book, I think, about media moguls, media mergers. Downside is you also have to spend your day job writing about media mergers and media moguls.

0:57.6

It's been kind of an insane week.

1:02.5

You're multitasking. You have two big stories in the journal today. One is an excerpt from this book and the other is a great piece about Fox and Disney and Comcast in that battle. And I want

1:07.6

to talk to you about that for a minute because we're recording this on Friday. You guys will hear this six days later. So who knows what will happen in the interim, but I want to get a sense of the state of play. So your piece essentially lays out the background between the Fox Disney Comcast battle. And the general thesis is the Murdox say, and maybe even believe they really do want to do this deal with Disney and they don't want to do with Comcast.

1:29.4

Am I summarizing that correctly? That is true. I have to put it, you know, asterisk at the top of any of this. And, of course, they say they're going to take the highest bid. They have to, legally. Of course. And the one most likely to close. That's important because there's a lot of doubt about whether Comcast can get anything through with regulators from the Fox side.

1:50.2

But look, they like Disney because they're most like Disney.

1:54.1

The Murdox are selling.

1:55.2

Why does Rupert Murdoch, when you sell a house, you generally don't care who buys the house,

1:59.8

maybe even emotional attachment of the house, but you're selling it.

2:01.7

You're not going to live it anymore.

2:03.2

Here are these assets take them. Why does Rupert Murdoch care who buys his assets? Well, first of all, it depends on whether you're selling for cash or stock, right? So if you're selling for stock, you're getting part of the other person's house. and the Murdox really like Disney's house, Bob Biker's house.

2:19.3

To be clear, right now, the Comcast deal is... person's house. And the Murdox really like Disney's house, Bob Bebiker's house.

2:19.3

You know, they... To be clear, right now, the Comcast deal is for much more money.

2:23.1

At this point, Disney's Sweeten bid is actually higher in value.

2:27.8

You're right. I'm sorry. I'm two stories behind.

2:30.4

It goes fast. Yeah, but who knows what's going to be the case in a few days.
