The family road trip brings to mind an overpacked station wagon, some unimpressed kids in the back,

and a couple of adults arguing up front over a comically large map.

It's supposed to be a good time, but in reality, usually, it's a bit of a nightmare,

especially if Dad made a wrong turn, and then another, and it's getting dark,

welcome to Marooned, harrowing tales of the catastrophically lost.

Thanksgiving 2006, James and Katie Kim, along with her two daughters,

Penelope, four, and Sabine's seven months, are planning a road trip to visit some friends and family

for the holidays. Beginning at their home in San Francisco, they would travel north on the I-5 up to

Seattle to visit with family.

On the way back, the plan was to stop in Portland to visit there with friends.

After that, they'd continue southwest to Gold Beach on the southern Oregon coast before returning

home to San Francisco.

Husband and father, 35-year-old James Kim, is known for doing technology reviews for Tech TV,

a cable network tech program. Currently, he's a senior editor for CNET, writing gadget

reviews and even co-hosts a weekly podcast, The MP3 Insider, while his wife, 30-year-old Katie,

manages their two family-owned shops in the San Francisco

area. Now the Kim's, they're no strangers to road trips, often taking the girls on the road

during their time off, and they're looking forward to the 14-hour drive up to Seattle.

Early on Friday, November 17, 2006, Katie and James pack up their 2005 Silver Sob station wagon,

get the girls situated and comfortable, then hit the road. After spending the week with their
