The news emerged late yesterday afternoon as rumors. The Israeli military says it is checking the possibility that the leader of Hamas Yaya

Sinwa has been killed. It said the identity of what it called three

dead terrorists had been saying that they had targeted a building and

that three Hamas figures were killed, that they were verifying whether one of them was in fact the Hamas leader

Yachya Senoir. Now of course Mr. Senoir was elected.

A body had been found in the rubble in Gaza, one that bore a striking

resemblance to Yaya Sinwa, the leader of Hamas and one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attacks.

The Israelis said first that they were checking, running DNA tests, comparing fingerprints and dental records.

And by the evening in Jerusalem, it was confirmed.

Sinwa was dead, killed by Israeli troops on Thursday.

Yaya Sinwa was intensely hunted by Israeli drones and planes and troops on the ground for more than a year, thought to be hiding in tunnels and bunkers,

while the cities and people above him were shattered and killed by Israeli fire.

He must have known he would not survive. But what happens now, in this Middle East that he helped to plunge into crisis, nobody knows for sure.
