This is the second in a series of programs unmatched in history.

Never have so many people seen the major candidates

for President of the United States at the same time.

And never, until this series,

have Americans seen the candidates in face-to-face exchange. Oh, It's true to say that the first presidential debate occurring between two candidates actually running for president is 1960.

And that's Kennedy and Nixon in a series of four debates between September and October 1960.

But it's also true that there was another type of presidential debate in

1956 when Dwight Eisenhower was running against Adelai Stevenson, the Republican,

and the Democrat. There is a debate between Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret

Chase Smith, Roosevelt representing the Democratic candidate.

But there can be no question in the people's minds of the failure of our policies in the near east

which have now resulted in our making NATO weaker, our alliance with our allies.

Smith who is a senator speaking for the Republicans.

Senator Smith, I assume that you believe the Republican candidate is going to win,

but I wonder what you think the chances are of his taking a Republican House and Senate with him in view of the results in your own state?
