Hi, this is Dana Stevens, Slate's movie critic, and I'm here with a Slate spoiler special on the Karate Kid remake.

0:06.4

Joining me in the Slate's studio is John Swansberg. Hello, John.

0:09.9

Who is Slate's Culture Editor, and John, you're going to have to give us some deep background on this one. Why are you here with me spoiling the Karate Kid?

0:17.1

Only because the Karate Kid, the original film from 1984, is my favorite movie ever. I wore a hole in the VHS tape that I owned as a child.

0:27.1

How old were you when the movie came out? I guess I would have been seven years old when the original came out.

0:31.7

But you discovered it a little later. I think I discovered it a little bit later. I think I saw Karate Kid 2 in the theater and that I was a, I discovered the VHS version of the original, but I just watch it over and over again. Mostly I would just watch the last, you know, 15 minutes, the sort of fight montage at the tournament at the end. But I've probably seen the movie, you know, 30 or 40 times all the way through.

My best, I think my best karate kid, Bonafide, is that fans of the movie will recall that on Halloween in the original movie, Mr. Miyagi makes for Danielson a Halloween costume that is a shower.

1:07.8

He actually goes to the school Halloween dance as a shower. And I can say that I have gone to a school dance, Halloween dance of my own, as a shower. Not an easy costume to rig up, I should say. My esteem for Mr. Miyagi, which was already high, only grew when I tried to rig my own shower costume.

1:32.4

The man can do karate, grow bonsai trees, and make a very impressive Halloween shower costume.

1:34.7

Did you have tinsel for water coming out of the... I did. I had tinsel for water. I used sort of PVC piping. I couldn't find the red and white

and white polka dot shower curtain that Mr. Miyagi has.

1:45.7

But I improvised something that was similar.

1:48.2

One day, some Halloween to come.

1:49.9

Yeah, I was really popular at that party.

1:51.6

Some people didn't realize it was a karate kid reference, but they still thought it was an awesome costume.

1:55.8

Because it is an awesome costume.

1:56.6

But did you get a girl to come inside the shower curtain with you?

1:59.0

Yeah, I definitely got a girl and have a dance.

2:01.2

She wasn't as hot as Elizabeth Shoe, though.

2:03.5

So let's talk a little bit about, well, I want to jump freely from the old to the new karate kid, because we should also mention that as more deep background, you and I had a viewing together last week of the old karate kid as well, which I had never seen in its entirety.

2:16.8

Because I guess because it came out... Call yourself a film critic.

2:20.2

Pathetic.
