Summary

Fifteen years into a career that began humbly, writing songs in college and touring the southeast in his Honda Accord, Ben Rector found himself in a place where many artists did at the start of a global pandemic: reassessing his reasoning for a career in music in the first place. The internal prodding organically led to a seat back at the piano in his home studio, where Rector processed his findings with the ornate-but-relatable lyricism fans have come to know and love. The end result is his forthcoming album The Joy of Music, due out March 11. Over the course of 12 tracks, the Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter reaffirms his penchant for evocative, piano-pop anthems that touch on family, fame and friendship. Musically, it’s also full of collaborative surprises, showcasing a breathtaking evolution in sound and spirit - leading to what Rector considers his best work to-date.  The Joy of Music is “a good microcosm of what the last couple of years of my life have been, which is trying to find joy and peace where I’m at, and finding it,” Ben says. “I’m in a deep place of gratitude for where I’m at.”  Indeed, his career has taken him from the challenging beginnings of every up-and–comer, to one of the most successful independent artists to-date - a gate-keeper, of sorts, and the creator of a highly effective career blueprint that continually leads to win after win. He’s amassed over a billion streams across all platforms; played live on a number of national television shows, including Jimmy Kimmel, Conan, The Today Show, and more; had his music featured in over a hundred TV shows, ads, and films including Pretty Little Liars and Castle (his single “Brand New” is one of the most licensed songs for television and film in the last five years); hit the number one spot on Billboard’s US Folk chart and the number nine spot on their top 200; was an all-star mentor on ABC hit show American Idol alongside Ryan Tedder, Jewel, Jason Aldean, Jimmie Allen, and Joss Stone (among others); sold out three consecutive nights at the legendary Ryman Auditorium as well as countless other theaters and arenas around the country... and that’s just the start.  Fans of Ben’s musical stylings and persona will be pleased to find the new project marked by introspection, and this time, the results are more profound than ever.  “I was so excited to wake up every morning and feel like a kid again, making music,” he explains of the recording process. “I wanted to make mistakes and take chances, and I was just so stoked to chase whatever sounded fun to me. It wasn’t from any sense of obligation, but just a fun wave to ride.”  “It’s the best that it has been in a long time,” he croons on the album’s centerpiece, “Living My Best Life.”  To learn more visit benrectormusic.com

Well, it's good to see you and what it is to be me right now is so we're releasing this record

0:34.2

which is there's a lot going on and then honestly a big part of my life currently

0:39.6

is taking care of my children which is hilarious. We have 18-month-old twin boys and a daughter

0:45.9

who is four and a half. Come on! And so yeah, it's kind of an interesting moment for me because I

0:53.7

throughout the pandemic and then with the twins being so young, I was doing, you know,

0:59.1

I was making music etc but I wasn't really in this phase of the artist process which is like now

1:04.3

it's like time to go back out into the world and be like doing stuff again. And so this is the

1:10.0

very beginning of that for me so it's kind of, it feels like I'm like putting back on like my

1:14.8

ski boots or something. It's like oh yeah, I gotta go ski now, you know. Oh yeah, there's a thing

1:19.2

that I do. I feel a little bittersweet because of this time that I think a lot of us just

1:26.1

rediscovered all the people that we love and have been living with. I think it definitely is

1:30.9

bittersweet. I think this is the first record that I've made that I am just like all the way

1:37.1

excited about and so there's part of me too that's like excited to see that go out into the world

1:42.5

and there's also nerves with that as well like it's a vulnerable thing and especially with this

1:47.3

when I feel like subconsciously on previous records it's easy to be like yeah well I wish I'd

1:52.8

done this a little different or that a little different etc and on this one I'm like I hit the

1:58.1

ball hard on this one and I hope people really like it. So that's kind of a new feeling for me

2:03.6

of being vulnerable and being like yeah man I think this is great. So it's all those things together

2:09.5

it's exciting to kind of be back in that and then there's also the part of you that's like oh wow
