Hello and welcome to Political Thinking.

Coming this week from College Green, that little patch of grass which plays such a vital

constitutional role, home as it is to the cameras and the mics and the gazeboes which are

company, the search for a new Prime Minister.

Never before have so many seemed to believe that they should lead a country facing so

much with so few actually getting to choose who our country's next leader is.

After all the talk about the struggle to drag Boris Johnson out of number 10, kicking

and screaming after all the public angsting about a constitutional crisis, it may turn out

that the Conservative Party have only just done the easy bit.

Agreeing that Boris Johnson's time was up was one thing.

Meaning who should replace him and what direction they should take the country in could prove

quite another.

After days, no weeks, well damn it actually months of evasions and downright untruths

does not forget that the Prime Minister, and yes he is still the Prime Minister, was

absolutely right about one thing.

The choice his party faces was not Boris or not Boris, it was it is a much bigger question.

What is the Tory vision for Britain post Brexit and post pandemic?

Is it a return to thatcherism and if so which brand of it early thatcher who insisted on

the importance of sound money and balancing the books or later thatcher who believe that

tax cutting deregulation and the rolling back at the state were the cures for Britain's

ills?
